Selva (Wolkenstein, in German) is a charming village at the head of Val Gardena (Groden, in German) in the Italian Dolomites. It's situated at 1,583 metres, and is well-developed for winter and summer tourism. As a ski resort, Selva links into the vast "Dolomiti Superski" area, which includes the Sella Ronda and is one of the largest in Europe, but retains its own character and comparative quietness.
Winter visitors who don't want to ski have a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities to choose from, and in summer it's a convenient base for the surrounding mountains such as the Odler and Sella Groups, the Langkofel and the Piz de Cir, all of which are equipped with the protected Via Ferrata rock-climbing routes typical of the Dolomites
The view from our Chalet L'Salvan, looking east towards the Sella Group. We were a few tens of metres above the centre of the village, which was ideal
The view across Selva and down Val Gardena. There was not much snow left on the south-facing slopes
The piste across the valley : this was the view we woke up to each morning
The Langkofel, soaring above the forests
The Ski Instructors' Torchlight Descent, ideally seen from our chalet. They did all kinds of fancy skiing, dancing, jumping and tricks (just a bunch of show-offs, really)
