We bought a winter walking and cross-country skiing map from the very helpful Tourist Office in Selva, and planned a sunny walk above the nearby village of St Cristina. We got there by the valley shuttle bus, using the complementary tourist tickets. Although recent building made the map hard to follow in places, the trail was generally good and there wasn't too much snow or ice to contend with. We had an excellent lunch at the Gamsblut restaurant, which is right by the piste leading down from the Col Raiser lift, and enjoyed continuous sunshine and wonderful views from this, the North side of Val Gardena

Glorious Dolomite views are everywhere : these are the Pizes de Cir, which we'd climbed by a Via Ferrata in summer, several years before

Almost down : a last view of the Langkofel, looking right into its hollow interior
