Acton Bridge WI - March 2015 Meeting Report

Guards Uniform and George Hughes

George Hughes brought a genuine Grenadier Guard's uniform for his talk on "Guards and Palaces"

"Guards and Palaces" was the theme of George Hughes' talk about aspects of his life in the Grenadier Guards. As a Welfare Officer of the Guards Association he had also been able to bring a genuine Guard's uniform, complete with busby, and members were soon being initiated into the inside details of busbies, uniform details differentiating the five Guards regiments, and the varied demands on soldiers who may be moving from active duties abroad to being on parade at Buckingham Palace and then back to active duty in rapid succession.

Coincidentally, this was the meeting when members learned that all WIs are being invited to send a delegate to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. All members able to travel to London to represent us are being invited to give their names to our Secretary, Valerie Mitchell, and the lucky representative's name will be drawn at the April meeting on April 14th. It will be held in Acton Bridge Parish Rooms as usual at 7.30pm , when Judy Popley will be talking about "A Prospect of Arley". Visitors are very welcome.

The President for the month, Rosemary Mullett, also informed members of the change of date for their Centenary Celebration Picklefest and Autumn lunch to Saturday October 10th, and reported the death at the age of 98 of one of our most faithful members and supporters, Olga Taggart. Sue Williams reported back on the Cheshire Federation's Spring Meeting, and a number of members arranged to attend the PALs lecture on "Shale Gas and Fracking, information not emotion" by Prof. Kevin Taylor of Manchester University.
