Welcome to Acton Bridge Women's Institute

REPORT OF APRIL 2012 MEETING

The President for April, Sue Williams, welcomed everybody back after Easter, and introduced Helen Carey, who had come to inspire us with tales of her work in the WI, especially as the national President. Best known in the media for chairing the AGM when Tony Blair was given a handbagging slow handclap, she dwelt more on how a high public profile helped her further the WI's work. Thanks to the film "the Calendar Girls" and Tony Blair, people began to realise that the fun and friendship had a serious purpose beyond just jam, knitting and nattering. The WI is growing with new branches and members across all age groups.

Before the talk, the treasurer, Jane Evans, reported that the Village Quiz evening had been both a financial success and very enjoyable, and Sue thanked everyone who had participated and helped behind the scenes to make it so. The St John's Ambulance Essential First Aid course had also been well attended and very instructive. Members had been circulating further information on how the symptoms of heart attacks in women can be easily overlooked because, unlike men, they often do not have chest pains amongst their symptoms.

Members are signing up to help with providing the teas during the village Jubilee celebrations on June 2nd. The next meeting will be held in Acton Bridge Parish Rooms at 7.30pm on Tuesday May 8th, when the proposed resolution for the national AGM, calling for the government to increase the numbers of midwives in the face of the current chronic shortages, will be debated. Everyone is asked to bring some food to share for supper together afterwards. The programme for the year and further details of the month's activities can be found at www.ActonBridge.org.
