Welcome to Acton Bridge Women's Institute

Report of December 2011 Meeting

January's meeting saw a high turnout of Acton Bridge WI members and visitors. The January President, Judy Pardoe, welcomed them all and the speaker, local chiropractor Clare Mather, talking about chiropractic, which offers the world's third largest health care provision after medicine and dentistry. Her wide-ranging talk explained the long (5 year) training, and the conditions for which this form of treatment might be relevant, including the treatment of babies and young children as well as adults. A model of the adult spine helped her explain some of the sources of back pain which form 55% of her case load, and causes the loss of 50 million working days per year nationally.

The meeting also heard reports on the successful Christmas Party in December, and the meetings about the future of the Weaver Valley group of WIs. Members thanked the Brownies and the Darnhall Dancers for their very enjoyable contributions to the party, and offered warm support for the new Group chairman, hoping that there will be more opportunity for the various Institutes in it to get to know each other under the new direction. The Treasurer had also introduced the budget for the year. Members are being asked to consider what new formats might be appropriate for the Christmas Party, to be discussed in February, as the current offer of a free invitation to all seniors in the village places a heavy financial obligation on the WI members, who must also fundraise for themselves. There are already plans for another of their very popular fundraising supper quizzes on March 23rd.

Other plans include theatre visits, and a course on "Essential First Aid for all Ages" with St Johns Ambulance on Saturday March 31st, which is open to all members as well as local residents. The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Saint Valentines Day, Tuesday February 14th, when Tessa Holmes will be talking on "Lace and Liverpool". The full programme for the year and further details of all our other activities can be found on our website at www.ActonBridge.org.
