Welcome to Acton Bridge Women's Institute

ACTON  BRIDGE  W I
REPORT OF APRIL MEETING, 2008

The decision to invite Fatma to be the guest speaker at an open meeting of Acton Bridge WI in April had been greeted with amusement if not disbelief in some quarters. Undeterred, she charmed, entertained, instructed and amused everyone who was present with her energy, skill, and humour. After explaining the origins of the cultural dances of the Middle East, and of her own interest in them, she was soon involving members of the audience in dancing, making music and recreating ceremonies. The President ended up dressed as an Egyptian goddess, and everyone enjoyed learning to ululate their appreciation of Fatma's dancing and her beautiful costume.

Before Fatma's arrival, Sue Williams had opened the evening with a welcome to all the guests, including May James on a welcome visit from her new home in the south. Members were asked to sign up for a number of upcoming events, including a guided tour of Tatton hall and gardens on May 8, and the group craft workshop on 25 April. There is to be a walk round some of the local bluebell woods on May 2nd, and a tour of Fryers Rose Nursery on the evening of June 30th. On August 2nd there will be a guided outing "From Cathedral to Cathedral" in Liverpool, which is open to the first 25 members, including their friends and families, to apply. Members were also encouraged to start preparing for the Acton Bridge Produce and Craft Show on 6th September.

The next WI meeting will be on Tuesday May 13 and will include a discussion of possible resolutions to be presented at the AGM in June, followed by a faith supper and a chance to socialise informally.
