Welcome to Acton Bridge Women's Institute

REPORT OF FEBRUARY 2012 MEETING

The February President, Judy Pardoe, welcomed everybody and their guests to the Acton Bridge Parish Rooms. The speaker, Tessa Holmes, who had come to talk about “Lace and Liverpool”, had already had an opportunity to explore the rooms and admire the recent refurbishments, commenting that there had been many changes since she had come to them over 30 years ago for her very first introduction to the complexities of lace making. Since that time she had gone on to make and design lace herself, become an executive of the Lace Council and has recently been working to catalogue and restore the extensive collection in the Liverpool Museum. She went on to give a history and description of the different styles of lace making.

Before the talk, the committee reported back to the members on the discussions about future Christmas parties for members and village seniors. It was decided that everyone attending the next party would be asked to contribute £5 towards the cost of the meal, as members do not feel able to undertake fund-raising for the party as well as for the WI. Flyers are being circulated for the the WI fund-raising quiz on Friday 23 March. There are still places available for the St John’s Ambulance Essential First Aid course on 31 March, which had been publicised in the ABCA News. Members will also be providing the teas during the village Jubilee celebrations on June 2nd.

The next meeting, which is open to all women in the village, will be held in Acton Bridge Parish Rooms at 7.30pm on Tuesday March 13th, when David James will be talking on “Industrial Wasteland, Wildlife Haven?”. The programme for the year and further details of the month’s activities can be found at www.ActonBridge.org.
