ACTON  BRIDGE  W I
REPORT OF MARCH MEETING

In March, a lively, well-attended meeting at Acton Bridge heard Dr Mark Newbrook's talk on Cheshire Dialects. Beginning with a brief history of the science of linguistics, he explained how dialects can change their vocabulary and grammar quickly, often through the influence of listening to faraway speakers' accents on radio and television. However there is a need to talk, and have replies, before accents change and he wondered whether the growth of cheap international conversation on Skype might lead to faster change in accents. He listed many common current Cheshire words and pronunciations, and encouraged any interested amateurs to record local usage, even if it was not systematised.

His talk had been preceded by 3 personal reports on the Cheshire Federation's Annual Council Meeting, whilst Ruth Smith had sent a written account of her attendance at Denman College as last year's winner of the Denman draw. She had studied willow weaving and several examples of her work were on display. This year's draw was then made by Dr Newbrook. The winner was Margaret Ashworth, with Valerie Mitchell as runner-up.

Sue Williams pointed out a number of coming events, and gave advance notice of the August 2nd outing to Liverpool, (which is open to the first 25 members, including their friends and families, to apply) and of the Acton Bridge Produce and Craft Show on 6th September. She also encouraged everyone to invite their friends to the next WI meeting, which will be an open, informal meeting, on Tuesday 8 April at 7.30 pm as usual in the Parish Rooms, when Fatma will be talking about (and demonstrating?) Oriental Dance.
