ACTON  BRIDGE  W I
REPORT OF FEBRUARY MEETING

If members of Acton Bridge WI were hoping that a talk by Peter Turner entitled "Inside Secrets of a Magician" would answer that perennial question "how do they do that?", then they were sadly mistaken. In an enthralling talk he only managed to leave even more tantalising questions unanswered. How did the orange silk handkerchief reappear in a member's handbag when the audience was seated no more than 18 inches from him, watching with eagle eyes all the pockets and overcoats he might have stored something in? A range of optical illusions, card tricks and strange tales of coincidences - or magic?- only served to add to the mysteries.

Before that, the President had welcomed members and visitors to the February meeting. Amongst other items of news and forthcoming events she announced that the Group Denman bursary awarded to Marjorie Sandys-Winsch is be used to offer all Acton Bridge WI members a day of guided tours at Tatton during the azalea season in April/May, visiting inside the Japanese Garden and then exploring some of the secrets of the House's interiors after lunch. The Treasurer presented her budget for the year, reminding members that only those who have paid their subs can be entered into the March draw for a Denman bursary worth £200. Anyone who pays tax can also Gift Aid their subscriptions, allowing the branch to retain 28 pence for every pound of subscription paid.

Details of the programme for the year and other events, such as local walks and visits to the theatre, are posted monthly on the website and can be found by clicking the WI logo at www.actonbridge.org. The next meeting will be at the Parish Rooms as usual, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 11th, when Dr Mark Newbrook will be talking about Cheshire Dialects. All are welcome.
